Implementation of the West Pilbara Iron Ore Project (the “Project”) will bring about substantial change for communities local to the development. While the economic benefits stemming from the Project will be positive, API acknowledges that not all the changes will necessarily be perceived this way. API has instituted an ongoing programme of consultation to inform on the Project and progress in its design and evaluation, and to canvass the advice, interests and opinions of stakeholders.
API is cognisant of, and sensitive to, the change that the Project will bring to those with existing interests in the land in and around the project footprint, such as the Traditional Owners (including cultural and heritage assessments) and pastoralists. These changes begin with increased activity in the exploration and feasibility stages of a project and API acknowledges in particular the cooperation and engagement of the Traditional Owners and pastoralists associated with the proposed mine areas, where the project footprint is defined with more certainty.
